Discover the charm of Melun

40 kilometres from the hotel

Hotel Malesherbes

Our charming hotel in Loiret, right by the border with Seine-et-Marne, is the perfect place to stay to discover Melun. Melun was already a town in antiquity, under the Gauls. Its history goes back over 2,000 years. Early on, the Capetians were drawn to the town, which developed around a royal château and Notre-Dame collegiate church, founded by Robert le Pieux. This 11th century edifice, which is listed as a historic monument, is a masterpiece of Romanesque art with its 50-metre nave, its great arcades and high windows.

Nearby, take in one of the town’s oldest monuments: Saint-Sauveur Priory. Its foundations date back to the 10th century. Then, continue your stroll through the town towards the Gothic church of Saint-Aspais - even more imposing than Saint-Sauveur - with its surprising, irregular trapezoidal layout. It is also a listed monument and has some extraordinary sculptures, stained glass windows, and stone altarpieces. Then stop by Place Saint-Jean with its fountain, the town hall (formerly a convent) and Place de la Préfecture with its beautiful bell tower.

Gourmet treats in Melun

Famous for its Brie and honey

With its AOP (protected designation of origin) cheese, Melun has an extraordinary ambassador. Made from unpasteurised cow's milk for centuries, Brie de Melun is without doubt the forefather of all Brie cheeses. Aged for 5 weeks, it is full of flavour and presents a slightly salty taste. For the past several years, Melun has emerged as a producer of honey. Indeed, the town has set up a hive in its municipal greenhouses, where it invites school children to see the bees at work and also harvests the fruit of their labour. Taste and buy the honey from the Tourist Office!
